A depressed young woman

Greta Tintin Eleonora Erman Thunberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden. She came into the world as the first daughter between opera singer Malena Ernman and actor Svante Thunberg.

She lived a normal childhood in the country’s capital with her two parents and younger sister. At age 8, Greta learned about climate change when she saw a documentary at school and was terrified, prompting her to wonder why no further measures were being taken to stop the phenomenon.

Greta Thunberg’s father is a distant relative of Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius, one of the first to conduct climate change research. Arrhenius was one of the first to conclude that carbon dioxide has a negative impact on the atmosphere, a postulate of paramount importance in the study on global warming.

In 2014, Greta Thunberg’s parents noticed a change in her daughter’s behavior. The young woman was moodless, quiet, and even depressed. After seeing a psychiatrist, she was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and selective mutism.

Her mother, a moderately recognized figure in Sweden, made the diagnosis public in order to reach out to other young people who had these disorders.

Greta Thunberg’s determination

In order to combat her daughter’s depression, Malena and Svante encouraged Greta Thunberg to talk about what dismayed her. The young woman confessed that the problem of climate change was etched in her head and concerned her deeply.

Greta convinced her parents to go vegan, reduce their aircraft trips and commit to recycling. It was the good disposition of the couple that convinced the young woman that she could bring about change in the world.

In mid-2018, Greta Thunberg won a Svenska Dagbladet essay contest through an article in which she expressed concerns about what she called a climate crisis.

The young woman subsequently received an offer to join a Swedish association against global warming. It was through these new contacts that Thunberg got the idea of organizing school strikes for his voice to be heard.

Thunberg believes it is necessary for everyone to want to contribute to environmental conservation. It is vegan because meat and milk avoidance will play a major role in lowering toxic pollution and carbon emissions.

She even forced her parents into veganism and making them feel bad by claiming that they harmed her generation’s economic opportunities. She insisted on not flying in any aircraft because they add greatly to global warming.

“Time to Rebel’ from their new album saying the time for civil disobedience was here. Proceeds from the track will go to the protest movement “Extinction Rebellion”

“We have to acknowledge that the older generations have failed. All political movements in their present form have failed. But homo sapiens have not yet failed. Yes, we are failing, but there is still time to turn everything around.”

The start of a massive movement

Greta Thunberg’s protest began on August 20, 2018. The young woman simply stopped attending classes to sit in front of the Palace of Parliament in Stockholm, while holding a sign calling for a student strike to demand action against climate change.

“Some people, some companies, some decision-makers, in particular, have known exactly what priceless values they have been sacrificing to continue making unimaginable amounts of money. I think many of you here today belong to that group of people.” (Davos 23 January 2019)

Their strike lasted for three weeks, during which some reporters began covering the news. Thunberg’s cause began to stir on social media and his personal accounts began to accumulate followers.

I’m completely shocked by your abilities, Greta. Your powerful message is amplified by the energy of your youth and the immovable belief that young minds can change their own future. Desmond Tutu, nobel peace.

The exponential increase in her popularity helped Greta Thunberg spread her message. By the end of 2018, protests had spread across more than 270 cities around the world, especially in Europe.

The strikes evolved into massive mobilizations in which Thunberg participated and offered effusive speeches that helped raise awareness. Even for the experts, it was surprising the passion that the young woman showed towards her struggle.

“You are not mature enough to tell it like is,” she said at the summit, addressing the Secretary-General. “Even that burden you leave to us children. But I don’t care about being popular. I care about climate justice and the living planet.”

Travel and cultural impact
